Loans Without a Bank Account: Cash, Check and Prepaid Card Options
Sometimes. Many lenders, especially online ones, require a bank account. Some store lenders pay in cash or by check, and a pawn loan does not need an account at all. Two things matter: how the money reaches you, and how you pay it back. Ask about both before you sign.
Lenders that say they require a bank account
Several brands in our directory say so on their own pages (all checked October 2026):
- Cash Store's FAQ says: "Do I have to have a bank account? Yes - an open and active checking account, active for at least 30 days, is required to apply." (source)
- Possible Finance says: "For security purposes, your loan funds must be sent to the bank account you used to apply." (source)
- OppLoans says borrowers must "Have a bank account (checking account or saving account)". (source)
- EarnIn's help page says: "A linked checking account is required." (source)
- Varo lists "Qualifications required, including bank account deposits." (source)
- Klover's FAQ says: "We need you to link your bank account so we can: - Send your cash advance quickly and securely. - Review your cash flow to determine the amount you're eligible for. - Verify you're not a robot." (source)
A pattern shows up. Online lenders and cash-advance apps use the account both to pay you and to collect. If you have no account, these will probably not work. Check each lender's own page.
Lenders that say they pay in cash or by check
Store lenders are different, and a few describe other payouts. What they say (checked October 2026):
- TitleMax's FAQ page carries the line: "Learn the facts… learn how you can get a loan without a bank account !" (source). That is a teaser line. The page we read does not list the steps, so ask a store how it works.
- CashMax's Texas site says: "30 minutes in, cash in hand." (source)
- Western Shamrock / Check Exchange's FAQ says: "Funds are received in person via check at your branch or by ACH during the loan closing." (source). ACH is a bank transfer, so that route needs an account. The check route does not.
- Republic Finance's home page says: "If you've received a loan check in the mail, you've already been pre-approved for a loan with Republic Finance!" (source). That is about loan checks mailed to people the company pre-approved. It does not say you can apply without an account.
None of these quotes says how you repay if you have no account. Ask.
Paying it back without an account
Payout and repayment are separate questions. A store may hand you cash and still want a post-dated check or a bank debit to collect. Ask:
- "Can I pay in cash at the store? Can I pay in person on the due date?"
- "Do you need a check or a bank debit from me? What happens if it does not clear?"
- "Is there a fee to cash your check? Who charges it?"
- "What is the total I repay, in dollars, and the APR?"
- "Are you licensed in this state?"
We do not have sourced numbers for check-cashing fees, so we do not give any. Ask the cashing business to state its fee in dollars before you hand over a check. Our lenders near me page lists stores with phone numbers.
Pawn loans: cash with no account
With a pawn loan you leave an item with a pawn shop and get cash. EZPAWN's home page describes it as "Walk out with cash in hand!" (source, checked October 2026). The shop holds your item as collateral. Rules differ by state. In Texas (Tex. Fin. Code ch. 371):
- A pawnbroker needs a pawnshop license (§ 371.051).
- A pawn loan matures in one month at most, unless both sides agree in writing to extend it (§ 371.160).
- The shop must hold an unredeemed item for at least 30 days after maturity. You can redeem it in that time. After day 30 it can be forfeited (§ 371.169).
- You do not have to redeem the item or make a payment (§ 371.170).
- The monthly charge is capped in tiers: 20% for amounts at or below a $30 reference amount, 15% on the next tier up to $200, 2.5% up to $300, and 1% above that (§ 371.159(c)).
The tiers use reference amounts that the law adjusts, so the dollar figures change. See Texas pawn shops for where we list stores.
Getting a bank account, or a card, to receive money
Opening a low-cost account can open more choices. The FDIC's #GetBanked page says "Many banks offer accounts with low or no minimum balance requirements." It says certified Bank On accounts "have low and transparent costs and don't allow overdraft or insufficient fund fees," and that over 400 accounts at more than 300 banks have been independently certified. It adds that you can make a first deposit with a debit card, prepaid card, electronic transfer, or at a branch. Banks set their own ID rules; see our ID guide.
A prepaid card is another way to receive money. The CFPB says "Most prepaid cards charge fees to do things like maintain your account, make purchases or withdraw money." Compare the fee list before you load one. The CFPB also says prepaid card use does not build credit, since the payments are not reported to the three nationwide credit reporting companies.
What you'll need
- A government photo ID. Which ones count is the lender's choice.
- Proof of income, such as pay stubs or benefit letters.
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or a lease.
- For a title loan, the car title in your name. For a pawn loan, the item.
Ask the lender which documents it accepts before you go.

Options to consider first
These are general options, not recommendations of a particular provider.
- A credit union payday alternative loan (PAL). PALs I are $200 to $1,000 over 1 to 6 months, and PALs II go up to $2,000 over 1 to 12 months, with an application fee of at most $20 (12 CFR 701.21(c)(7)). A PAL usually means a membership account, so it can be a first step toward banking.
- A payment plan. Ask your landlord, utility or clinic for more time.
- 211. Call 211 or visit 211.org for local help with rent, utilities and food.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a payday loan without a bank account?
It depends on the lender. Some say an account is required. Others pay in cash or by check. Ask how you will be paid and how you will repay.
Can I get a title loan without a bank account?
TitleMax's FAQ page teases "how you can get a loan without a bank account." Other title lenders may differ, so ask a store.
Is a pawn loan a loan with no bank account?
Yes, in the sense that you leave an item and get cash. In Texas you are not required to redeem the item, and the shop keeps it if you do not.
Can I get paid by check?
Western Shamrock says funds can be received in person by check at the branch. Other lenders may not offer it.
Will a prepaid card work to receive a loan?
We have no lender that says so. Ask the lender if it can send funds to a prepaid card, and check the card's fees.
Where can I find a low-cost bank account?
The FDIC's #GetBanked page explains low-cost and Bank On certified accounts. Ask any bank what ID it takes.
